Jack Stocken will restart his Bridge courses on Monday 7th October 2019. All courses last eight weeks, cost £125 and no partner needed. If you have to miss a class or two, then these can be made up when the course is repeated. There will be a half term break, so no Bridge on the 21st October, denoted by a red asterisk below. Minimum numbers apply.

“Jack is a Bridge teacher par excellence, as many will testify”

Andrew Robson, Times columnist and Number One British player.

The venue is The Helmsley Arts Centre, The Old Meeting House, Helmsley, YO62 5DW. There is parking available at the rear of the building and in the town.

Schedule below in course order:

4.00pm – 5.30pm

This really does mean beginner; it’s either for people who have never touched a playing card in their lives or for those who learnt in the distant past. Starting from scratch and learning at a gentle pace throughout the eight weeks, the emphasis is on fun and enjoyment, although you will be given clear notes at the end of each class.   1.    Introduction 7th October

  3.    Scoring 28th October
  4.    The Play – Winning Tricks 4th November

  6.    Responding to 1NT 18th November
  7.    Responding to Suit Bids 25th November
  8.    Overcalling 2nd December

10.00am – 11.45am

Suitable for those who have played Bridge for a long time, or just a year or two, this course will bring you up to date with the modern game, as it covers all essential aspects of Bridge. This course follows on from the Next Step course. Set hands are used throughout and on all subsequent courses. 1.     Suit Bidding as Opener 7th October
  2.    Suit Bidding as Responder 14th October*
  3.    Playing Suit Contracts 28th October

Not as Advanced as the name suggests; this course is ideal for experienced social Bridge players or for those who are starting to enjoy the challenge and excitement of Duplicate Bridge. Fourth Suit Forcing and the UCB are two very useful conventional bids and everyone finds 4441 tricky!   1. Unassuming Cue Bid 7th October
  2. 4441 14th October*
  3. Playing No Trumps 28th October
  4. Fourth Suit Forcing 4th November

Imagine playing relaxed, randomly dealt Bridge hands with like-minded people in your living room, able to ask advice from a friendly, expert supervisor; this is the experience we aim to provide.

This session is ideal for Intermediates and Improvers to practice their game. No booking or partner necessary, so come to as many as you like. £10 per session. Nb No Bridge on Monday 21st October because of half term.

Courses start Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th October 2019 and include a Beginner course and two supervised play sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Please email Jack or look at this website for further details.
